What an Honour

By Sarah O’ Connell and Clodagh O’ Sullivan

On Wednesday the 16th of September, Scoil Barra received a very special visit from three soldiers.  The soldiers that came were Sergeant Denis McGarry, Sergeant Declan Hogan and Gunner Jim Donovan.  They came on behalf of the government to present an Irish flag and copy of the Proclamation of Independence  to the students and staff of Scoil Barra.

They came as part of the 1916 Rising centenary year.  Sergeant Denis McGarry read out the Proclamation with a member of our student council.  After they read the Proclamation the members of the Student Council  joined Sergeant McGarry at the top of the hall and received the flag and Proclamation on behalf of Scoil Barra.  Then the students and staff were taught how to take care of and respect the Irish flag.

Towards the end we had a Question and Answer session and got some very interesting facts about what life is like in the army nowadays.  To conclude the visit we all sang ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ for our guests.

Over all it was a great experience and we really enjoyed their visit.  We would like to thank the soldiers for taking time out their day to visit our school, we really appreciate it.
