Fresh from their incredible performances in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, Irish Olympians, 50 Km Walker Rob Heffernan and Marathon Runner Lizzie Lee delighted the pupils of Scoil Barra with their presence in the school this morning to launch the 2016 Nature Trek! The entire school community were totally enamoured with their well known guests and the rush for photos with and autographs of the stars started from early. Rob and Lizzie were genuinely humbled by the magnificent reception and warm welcome that greeted them on arrival at the school. The Annual Nature Trek is Scoil Barra’s major fundraising venture and this one was all the more special because it was actually the 31st Anniversary of the inaugural walk launched way back in October 1985.
Both Lizzie and Rob addressed the pupils of Scoil Barra in the hall, sharing their career histories and highlights, life experiences and advice with their adoring, enthusiastic fans. The talks were followed up with most intriguing and challenging Question and Answer sessions with each of the stars. Lizzie set the infants on their merry way amidst great banter and excitement at 11.30 a.m. Rob meanwhile cut the official ribbon at 12 noon to set the middle and senior pupils off on their escapade through the Regional Park. Thankfully very favourable autumnal conditions prevailed for the Scoil Barra Army in Wellies. A splendid time was had by all and the party afterwards was a roaring success!
Congratulations to all the walkers, their families, their very generous sponsors and to Ms. Lande for coordinating the day’s events and to Ms. O‘Connor for organising our very popular guests to attend. Can’t wait to do it all over again next year!!
