The Scoil Barra Athletics Team (33 boys and girls), after 6 weeks enthusiastic lunch time preparation went to the Co. Cork Schools’ Sports at Pairc Uí Chaoimh on 21st May 2014.
The girls were timed for Roinn 1 (Top level) sprints at 9.00am. After convening at Scoil Barra at 7am, a light warm up on the school field our girls team were ready to compete with the best:
3 Firsts: U 13 Stephanie Bazunu, U9 Irene Idouzee U8 Jersey Idouzee
1 Third: U10 Alexandria Osobase
These athletes accumulated 10 points for the team and won the overall cup in Roinn 1, The Michael Jackson Cup- overall for 2 years in a row.
Both U11 O11 Relay teams were in their Relay “Positions” at 9.45 am. The O 11 team of Katerina Skripovskij, Andrea Ring, Julie Creedon and Stephanie Bazunu competed strongly, finishing fourth. The U11 team of Kerri Cooper, Dielo Jalloh, Rachel O Keefe and Sara Buckley ran well also.
Our 3 sprint winners: Stephanie, Irene and Jersey competed in the County Championship race, a race combined of all the days winners. At U 13 Stephanie ran well in her semi-final but missed out at a place in the final. At U 9 and U 8 Irene and Jersey qualified from their semi-finals and ran in a final of 6 competitors. Irene Idouzee is the 2nd fastest U9 sprinter in Co. Cork for her second year running. Her sister Jersey stormed home to become the fastest U8 in the county as is crowned County Champion for 2014.
The girls returned to the school around big lunch time armed with a rare County Championship medal, Overall Cup (Michael Jackson Cup) and four trophies. There was great glee around the corridors of Scoil Barra. The girls had put it up to the boys team.
Mr Leen did the warm up on the field at lunch break. The bus sped the boys team to Pairc Uí Chaoimh for their races at 3.30. The sprint results:
2 Firsts: U8 Dylan Leahy U7 Sean Oragui
3 Seconds: U12 Josh Ambrose U11 Lee Kelly-Obi U8 Azeez Eleke
These athletes accumulated 12 points for the team and won the overall trophy for Roinn A, the Brother Conesius Cup. This is Scoil Barra’s fourth year in a row winning Roinn A team overall. We also delight in U 8 1ST and 2nd from Dylan and Azeez two years in a row.
Both U11 and O 11 relay teams were in the ready positions at 4.15. The O11 team of Abdul Eleke, Ryan Crowley, Stephen Mc Carthy and Josh Ambrose ran well finishing fourth.
The U11 team of Ronan Keane, Lee Kelly-Obi, Strength Iyanu and Jonah Osobase ran a very competitive race using excellent baton changes in motion to win one of the most exciting relay races of the day. The team were presented with the Corn Coigiltis.
Our 2 sprint winners Dylan at U8 and Sean and U7 competed in the county championship. Both qualified from their semi-finals. Sean Oragui competed strongly at U7 to finish fourth. Dylan Leahy took all opposition to win the county championship 2014. He is the U8 County Champion for 2014.
The success of the Athletics Team in 2014 made the coaching team of Ms O’ Connor, Ms Mc Carthy and Mr. Murphy rightly proud. The focus and determination of all competitors are a credit to all in Scoil Barra.
